The Jhyali, also known as Jhurma or Jhymta, is a cymbal-type musical instrument used in the traditional Nepalese music ensemble, Panche Baja. Made of bronze or brass, it consists of two metal plates that are struck together to create a ringing sound. Held in each hand, the plates collide to produce a vibrant and shimmering tone. The Jhyali’s unique sound adds depth and rhythm to the music, enhancing the overall composition.
Care Instructions
Handle gently and store in a soft, dry pouch to preserve metal integrity.
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after use to remove sweat or finger oils.
For tarnish, polish occasionally with a mild metal cleaner suited for multi-metal alloys.
Avoid prolonged exposure to high humidity, moisture, or direct sunlight, which can affect both tone and finish.
Origin & Cultural Significance
Jhyali are deeply embedded in Nepal’s musical traditions and are central to the Panche Baja ensemble, played during weddings, festivals, and ritual ceremonies by communities such as the Damai and Gaine
