Context & Use
Heritage & How It’s Used

Handcrafted in the Kathmandu Valley from Khiro wood, the Plain Sarangi represents one of Nepal’s most treasured folk instruments. Made from a single piece of wood with a hollowed double-chamber body and traditional four-string design, each sarangi is carefully shaped, assembled, and polished by hand using techniques passed down through generations of instrument makers. Natural variations in wood grain, tone, and finish are a hallmark of authentic handmade craftsmanship.

Traditionally played by the Gandharva (Gaine) community, the sarangi was used to share stories, songs, and news while traveling from village to village across Nepal. Today, it is cherished by musicians, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts alike. Whether played as a musical instrument or displayed as a symbol of Nepal’s rich artistic heritage, the sarangi brings warmth, tradition, and timeless character to any space
