Newars are the inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, the capital of Nepal. Like other women, they are responsible for the preparation of food for the welfare of the family. The woman sitting is frying boiled paddy in earthen pots using firewood as fuel in a mud stove. The fried paddy is poured into round bamboo basket called “piongcha”. It is then poured into the wooden bowl to be beaten by two women with wooden poles while it is still hot. It is stirred at interval with bamboo spoon to avoid stickiness. The finished product is then collected in “dalo” which is made of bamboo too.
The flat beaten rice is then cleaned and stored to be used as readymade dry food namely “chiura” which is eaten as a snack. The parts of the scene and the box are all made of recycled products.Nepal Knotcraft Centre holds all copyright and patent to this product.
