Newari Oil Lampstand – Panas 3

This is a fascinating long oil lampstand from the oldest Newari tribe of the 19^th century is a ceremonial sculpture that will have a significant decorative presence in a home. This fabulous hand-cast weighs around 10 kg, is 75cm long, and is made out of brass. For centuries, the local craftsperson from the same community has carved these excellent sculptures with the same detailing learned from their ancestors. This extremely skilled craft is known as Panas and is decorated with fine hand-carvings of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kumar.

• Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each use.

• For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and water, then dry immediately to avoid tarnish.

• Store in a dry place to preserve its brass shine.

Originating from the heart of the Newar artisan tradition in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, the Panas holds profound ritual value. It is traditionally lit during ceremonial events, festivals like Tihar, Indra Jatra, and auspicious openings, symbolizing illumination, spiritual clarity, and blessings for positive beginnings.
