Mirdang

The Mirdang is a revered Nepali percussion instrument, traditionally carved from a single block of wood and crowned with taut leather heads on both ends. Boasting a significant presence, this drum weighs around 10 kg and spans about 53 cm in length, making its resonant bass tones both powerful and spiritually evocative. Often associated with devotion, it is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Balarama, the divine brother of Krishna, and is commonly used to enhance chanting and devotional music sessions.

• Wipe the wooden body with a soft, dry cloth to keep dust and moisture away.

• Store in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity.

• Regularly check the leather heads—retighten or replace if they lose tension or appear worn.

• Handle gently when transporting, due to its weight and delicate tuning.
