Context & Use
Heritage & How It’s Used
Handcrafted in the Kathmandu Valley, the Panche Baja is a traditional ensemble of Nepali musical instruments that has been an essential part of the country’s cultural celebrations for generations. Each set includes handcrafted instruments—Narsingha, Damaha (Nagara), Sanai, Tyamko or Dholaki, and Jhyali—carefully made by skilled artisans using brass, copper, wood, leather, and traditional metalworking techniques. Every instrument is shaped, assembled, and finished by hand, with natural variations in tone, finish, and detailing that are the hallmark of authentic craftsmanship.
Traditionally played during weddings, religious ceremonies, festivals, processions, and other auspicious occasions, the Panche Baja is regarded as the ceremonial sound of celebration in Nepal. Today, it continues to be performed at cultural events and heritage programs while also being treasured by collectors, musicians, and cultural institutions as a living symbol of Nepal’s rich musical traditions. Whether performed as an ensemble or displayed as a cultural centerpiece, the Panche Baja represents joy, unity, and generations of artistic heritage.
